The 7 Questions Every Buyer Asks Before They Trust Your Brand (And How to Answer All 7 on the Page They're On)

A buyer lands on your page with two browser tabs already open, three vendor research notes in a Notion doc, and a calendar that doesn't have time for this. She has 40 seconds before she decides whether to keep reading or close the tab. She is not going to articulate what she's looking for. She probably doesn't fully know herself. But her attention is running a checklist, and if too many items on the checklist come back blank, she leaves.

The checklist is the same across almost every buyer category we've studied. Seven questions, mostly subconscious, that fire in roughly the same order. The page that answers all seven converts. The page that answers three converts at half the rate. The page that answers one converts almost nobody.

This paper walks through the seven questions, the data behind why each one matters, and where on a landing page each answer should sit. It is written for marketing directors and SMB owners who want their pages to do more of the conversion work without rebuilding the whole site.

A note on the data context. Unbounce's 2024 Conversion Benchmark Report, based on 41,000 landing pages, 464 million visitors, and 57 million conversions, found a 6.6% median conversion rate across industries. That is the number to beat. The gap between a 6.6% page and a 12% page is almost always trust. Layered onto that: Edelman's 2025 Trust Barometer Special Report on Brand Trust found 80% of people trust brands they use more than they trust business, media, government, or NGOs, which means the trust signal a buyer needs from your page is mostly about confirming she would use it, not about defending the entire category. The seven questions below are the trust gap, broken down.

What is question one, and where does the answer go?

The first question is "What is this, in one sentence?"

Buyers spend seconds, not minutes, deciding whether they're in the right place. The first thing the page has to do is confirm that they are.

The data on this is unambiguous. Unbounce's 2024 Conversion Benchmark Report found that copy at a 5th to 7th grade reading level converts roughly 56% better than 8th to 9th grade copy and twice as well as professional-level writing (11.1% vs. 7.1% vs. 5.3%). That gap is enormous, and most of it shows up in the headline. A buyer who has to re-read your hero copy to figure out what you sell has already lost interest.

Where the answer goes: the H1 and the subheadline at the top of the page. The H1 names the outcome. The subheadline names the mechanism. Both written at a reading level your buyer's tired afternoon brain can absorb in one pass.

What kills this answer: clever-but-vague headlines. "Reimagining how teams work." "Where momentum begins." "The future of (industry)." These read as marketing copy, not as a clear statement of what the buyer is looking at. They send the buyer back to the search results.

What works: a one-sentence answer to "what is this." If your H1 reads as a statement a customer might say back to a friend ("It's the tool that does X for Y"), you are in the right zone. If it reads as something only a marketing team would write, rewrite it.

Why does question two matter so much?

The second question is "Is this for me?"

The buyer needs to confirm she's in the right segment. Generic copy that tries to talk to everyone signals to her that no one specific has been thought about, which is the opposite of trust.

Specificity is the conversion lever here. A page that names the buyer's role, industry, company size, or situation in the first 15 seconds outperforms a generic page substantially. The buyer recognizes herself, and the recognition itself is a trust signal.

Where the answer goes: in the subheadline, in the first line of body copy, or in a clearly labeled "Built for X" callout near the top. If you serve multiple segments, separate landing pages by segment will outperform one page that tries to speak to all of them.

What kills this answer: hedging language. "For businesses of all sizes." "Whether you're a startup or an enterprise." "Designed for marketers, founders, and operators." Each of those phrases tells every reader that the page was not built for her specifically.

What works: naming the buyer. "Built for mid-market marketing directors." "For agencies repositioning around strategy." "Used by 1,200 healthcare practices." The buyer either is one of those things or she isn't. If she is, the page just earned ten seconds of attention.

Question three: do you actually do what you claim?

The third question is "Can I see proof?"

This is the credibility check. The buyer has seen too many vendor pages claim too many outcomes for the claim alone to do the work.

The trust data here matters. Edelman's 2025 Trust Barometer Special Report on Brand Trust found that 80% of people trust brands they use, more than they trust business, media, government, or NGOs, and that 60% of consumers trust what a creator or third party says about a brand more than what the brand itself says. The translation: customer voices on the page outperform brand voice on the page when proof is the question being asked.

Where the answer goes: testimonials, case studies, and customer logos placed near the claims they support, not in a generic "trusted by" wall halfway down the page. The strongest pattern is to pair a specific claim with a specific proof point in the same visual block. "X reduced lead-gen cost by 40%" lives directly above a quote from a named customer at a named company, with their face and a measurable outcome.

What kills this answer: faceless testimonials, pseudonymous quotes, generic logo walls without context, and "trusted by industry leaders" lines that do not name the leaders. Each of those signals to the buyer that the proof was harder to assemble than the page is admitting.

What works: named customers, with faces, in the buyer's segment, with specific results that can be verified. The fewer of these you have, the harder the rest of the page has to work to compensate. Most pages we audit underuse the customers they already have.

Question four: what's this going to cost me, in money and in pain?

The fourth question is "What's the actual price, including the hidden costs?"

The buyer is doing two calculations at once. The dollar cost (what does it say on the invoice) and the pain cost (how hard is this to implement, how much of my time will it take, what happens if it doesn't work, what's the switching cost from what I have today).

Pricing transparency is one of the cleanest trust accelerators on a page. A pricing tier with clear numbers and a feature list converts substantially better than "Contact us for pricing" for any product the buyer can self-serve into. The "contact us" button is fine for enterprise contracts. It is conversion poison for everything else, and the broader cost-versus-value comparison the buyer is running in her head is the one laid out in agency vs. AI marketing cost.

Where the answer goes: a clear pricing block, ideally on the same page or one click away with a specific link. The block should show the dollar figure, the unit (per month, per seat, per project), and the headline of what's included. If the price is genuinely complex, a calculator or sample-quote tool is dramatically better than hiding it.

What also goes here, often forgotten: an honest acknowledgment of the implementation cost. Time-to-value, onboarding effort, what the buyer needs to commit to make this work. Buyers who feel the page is hiding something on this dimension assume the worst. Buyers who feel the page is honest about it assume better.

What kills this answer: pricing that requires three clicks to reach. "Starting at $X" without saying what's included at the X price. Bait-and-switch tier structures where the visible tier doesn't actually do the headline thing.

What works: clean pricing, transparent enough that the buyer can ballpark the bill without talking to sales, and honest enough about implementation that the buyer trusts the rest of the page.

Question five: who else has done this, and what happened?

The fifth question is "Has this worked for someone like me?"

Question three was "is the proof real." Question five is "is the proof relevant." A logo wall full of Fortune 500 customers does not, on its own, convince a 40-person SaaS company that the product fits her situation. The buyer needs to see someone like her in the proof set.

This is where most case studies underperform. They are written like marketing artifacts ("see how X transformed their business with Y") instead of like a story another buyer could see herself in. The result is that the case study's narrative arc never lands.

Edelman's 2025 Brand Trust report's broader finding was that consumer trust now sits more in personal, relational signals than in brand pronouncements. On a landing page, that translates to: more named buyer voices, more concrete situations, fewer abstract testimonials.

Where the answer goes: a case study or detailed testimonial block, ideally segmented by buyer type. The structure that works: who the buyer was (role, company, situation), what the problem was (specific, in their words), what they tried before, what they did with you, and what changed (with numbers when possible).

What kills this answer: case studies written in the brand's voice rather than the buyer's. Quotes that read like they were ghostwritten by the marketing team. Outcomes that are vague ("improved efficiency," "saw great results") rather than specific.

What works: a buyer voice the reader can recognize, a problem she has had herself, and a concrete outcome with a number attached. One excellent case study like this outperforms ten generic ones.

What about question six?

The sixth question is "What if this goes wrong?"

This is the risk reversal question, and most pages skip it entirely. The buyer is mentally simulating the worst case. What if I sign up and it doesn't work for me. What if I have to fight to get out of the contract. What if I waste a quarter on this.

The pages that address risk explicitly convert better than the pages that hope the buyer will not think about it.

Where the answer goes: a risk-reversal block near the call to action. Money-back guarantees, free trials, no-credit-card-required onboarding, easy cancellation, defined exit clauses. The specific mechanism varies by product. The presence of an explicit risk-reversal mechanism, prominently visible, does not.

What also goes here: any compliance, security, or regulatory signals the buyer needs to feel safe. SOC 2, HIPAA-ready, GDPR-compliant, accessibility-conformant, whatever applies. These are trust signals dressed up as compliance signals.

What kills this answer: terms hidden in fine print. Cancellation processes that are visibly designed to be hard. Compliance claims without specifics. Free trials that require a credit card to start without disclosing that the trial converts to a paid subscription automatically.

What works: a visible, specific guarantee. A frictionless trial. A clear answer to "how do I get out of this if it's not working." A short FAQ near the conversion point that addresses the obvious objections by name. Buyers who feel the exit is honest are more comfortable with the entrance.

Question seven: who actually answers when I have a problem?

The seventh question is "Will I be supported, or will I be alone?"

The buyer is now mostly convinced. She is doing the final check. If she signs up, who picks up the phone when something breaks. Who answers the email at 4pm on a Friday. Is there a real human, with a real role, who is going to make this work.

This is the least-answered of the seven on most pages, and the one that has gotten more important as buyer skepticism toward pure self-serve software has grown. The buyer increasingly wants to know there is a human in the loop.

BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey found that 80% of consumers are more likely to use a business that responds to all reviews, with 19% expecting a same-day response and 81% expecting a reply within a week. The instinct that drives that data, the desire to see that the business shows up when contacted, applies to the trust calculation on a landing page too. A page that shows responsiveness signals (named team members, a real chat presence with a human behind it, support hours, response time commitments) converts better than a page that hides them.

Where the answer goes: a support and team block. Team photos with names and roles. Named customer success contacts. Specific response time commitments. A real chat widget that connects to a real person during business hours. A FAQ with the question "Who do I talk to if I need help?" answered by name.

What kills this answer: anonymous "contact support" links. Help centers that look like the company is hoping the buyer will not need them. Chatbots that announce themselves as bots and never offer escalation to a human.

What works: a team page that demonstrates the company is real and reachable. Specific, named people in support and customer success. A response-time commitment that the company actually meets. A customer onboarding process described in concrete steps.

What does an AI-skeptical buyer need to see in 2026 that they didn't need to see in 2022?

A bonus consideration that lands across all seven questions.

Buyer skepticism toward AI-generated content has become a meaningful trust signal in itself. The Nuremberg Institute for Market Decisions (NIM) found in 2024 that 52% of consumers reduce engagement with content they believe is AI-generated. When buyers were informed of source, attitudes shifted significantly more positive toward human-made content. A page that reads as obviously AI-generated has a credibility ceiling that the seven-question framework above cannot fully overcome.

The AI-skepticism signal is not "do not use AI." It is "the page should not feel like AI is the writer." A few patterns that read as AI-flavored to the modern buyer's eye:

Generic phrases without specificity. The same vendor adjectives every page in the category uses. Bullet lists that all sound like the same length and rhythm. A consistent, smooth, slightly antiseptic register that no real human voice would actually have. Specific opinions absent.

The fix is not to abandon AI tools. HubSpot's 2026 State of Marketing report found 86.4% of marketing teams already use AI in at least a few areas, and that adoption is not reversing. The fix is to make sure the human voice and editorial judgment are visible on the page. Specific opinions. Specific examples. The kind of details that suggest a real person made the editorial choices, not a tool plus a checklist, which is the same diagnosis at the heart of why AI content sounds like AI content.

How does a team actually fix all seven questions on one page?

First, audit the page against the seven questions. Read it in 60 seconds, the way the buyer will, and mark which questions get a clear answer and which don't. Most pages we audit answer two to four. Almost no page answers all seven on the first pass, which is most of why a landing page doesn't convert.

Second, talk to five recent buyers. Ask them what made them trust you and what almost made them leave. Five conversations will surface the trust gaps faster than any tool. The buyer language from those conversations is also the rewrite material for the page itself.

Third, rewrite the page in priority order. The H1 and subheadline (questions one and two) are the highest-impact rewrite. Pricing transparency (question four) is the second. The risk-reversal block (question six) is the third. The other four are usually faster to fix once those three are right.

Fourth, ship and measure. Conversion rate week-over-week, scroll depth, time on page, qualified-lead rate. The reading-level finding from Unbounce alone (5th to 7th grade copy converting at 11.1% versus 5.3% for professional-level copy) suggests the rewrite is going to move conversion noticeably if the prior page was over-written.

Fifth, repeat the audit quarterly. Pages drift. Marketing teams change. Customer voices on the page age out. The seven-question framework is not a one-time exercise. It is the ongoing discipline.
